"The question being asked is why you and other alders voted No on increasing the OIM budget."
postedHi there,
"The question being asked is why you and other alders voted No on increasing the OIM budget." That's the question Chelsey posed to me by email after there were several comments on my personal Facebook page. Below you can find my reply to Chelsey. I'll also share my replies on my district social media pages as time permits. I have Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok pages.
My reply to Chelsey:
"Hello Chelsey,
The quick explanation on why I voted no on both items at both Finance Committee and Common Council is because first I want to put as much as possible towards the City's commitment towards creating an endowment to support the permanent men's shelter. Right now the new shelter is operating overnight only and I (along with some other Alders) want the shelter to be able to operate 24/7 as soon as possible.
Regarding the OIM, as you'll hear in the video linked below, there are ongoing operational conflicts. I invited NACOLE (starts about 19 mins in) to present to the Common Council to educate us with the goal of also helping us in trying to resolve these conflicts. Unfortunately the conflicts persist. I also voted no because I'm overwhelmingly concerned that these conflicts remain unresolved, despite efforts by City agencies the office works with to resolve them.
I've added some info below to help add context to why I voted no both at Finance Committee (watch) and at the most recent Common Council meeting.
Link to read. "...summary of Office of the Independent Monitor (OIM) issues and a status on current collaborative work. This summary covers the status of previously raised issues and new issues that have arisen." I refer to this document in my comments in the meeting linked below.
Link to watch Common Council meeting on 9/8/2026.
- The discussion and eventual vote on the budget amendment for the OIM starts at about 4:53:37.
- My comments which give some details on how the Council and myself have previously and continue to support the office: starts at about 5:15:01.
Lastly, this FAQ page may also be helpful in relationship to charging and investigation questions.
Thanks for reaching out,
Sabrina"
Please note that the NACOLE presentation ation starts at about 24:30 and I've also emailed that correction.
Have a good weekend,
